(Subtitle: Willing suspension of disbelief)

The Young Underpaid Professionals (YUPPIE) site needs fangirlism, seriously. So, I’m writing my first post on something anime/manga-related: Ultra Maniac. I thought of writing about an anime or a manga that has social relevance, something like Captain Tsubasa: Road to Victory, or Code Geass, or even The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. But I’m an epic failure at making relatively correct decisions at seemingly important moments, so I’ll write about Ultra Maniac. Besides, I just finished downloading the entire anime series and finished reading the scanlations for the 4th time.
I like Ultra Maniac. I watched its first run on Animax, and I even found some episodes of it on YouTube (bad, YT, bad). Nina Sakureil’s character is obviously a stereotype in a lot of shoujo manga/animes. Oblivious, naive, and… what? A witch, too? How fascinating! She can do magic! She’s constantly surrounded by the “cool” people at school (Kaji, her bff, captain of the tennis club, some friends from the Magic Kingdom, etcetera etcetera). And did I mention she’s also the apple of two bishies’ eyes? So, there, it’s a perfect read/watch for anyone who wants to live in corny lalaland and forget for a little while that “real” life is far from anything that happens in Ultra Maniac. So yeah, the willing suspension of disbelief while watching the series is definitely a welcome distraction rather than entertainment.
Don’t get me all wrong; I like Ultra Maniac. For three whole days I put my infiltration plan *wink, wink* and a lot of real life stuff on hold to finish the scanlations and then reread the manga. Yup, that entertaining. I like it that much.
Next up: Probably something La Corda D’Oro-related, but I’m never sure myself. ‘Til then.
