Personal Taste Tackles Being Gay In A Korean Drama

It’s been a while since I’ve watched a Korean drama, the last one that I watched wasn’t that interesting to me. I’m not actively watching dramas may it be Taiwanese, Korean or even locally-made ones. I tend to be picky on what to watch because I’m tired of those rehashed plots that are boring for me. Like Autumn’s Concerto, I accidentally got into watching this drama as well. I’m not really looking for something to watch but then Personal Preference’s plot seemed interesting so I’ve decided to give it a try.

Personal Preference’s (aka Personal Taste) story is about Jeon Jin Ho (Lee Min Ho), an architect, who pretends to be gay in order to become Park Kae In’s (Son Ye Jin) roommate. He has an ulterior motive at first but then, as Jeon Jin Ho gets closer to Park Kae In, they start to fall in love. Like other Korean dramas, there are two supporting actors to complete the love quadrangle. Han Chang Ryul (Kim Ji Suk) plays the ex-boyfriend of Park Kae In. He dumped her to marry her friend Kim In Hee (Wan Ji Hye). Han Chang Ryul eventually realizes that he loves Park Gae In and tries to win her back. On the other hand, Kim In Hee had set her eyes on Jeon Jin Ho even if she knows that he’s gay. There’s also another interesting character that fell in love with Jeon Jin Ho because he thought that he was gay, the director of the gallery, Choi Do Bin (Ryu Seung Ryong). Park Kae In eventually discovers that Jeon Jin Ho is not gay and they become a couple. But when Jeon Jin Ho’s motive was revealed, he decides to break up with her. Park Kae In’s father also played an important role in the show and of course it ends with a happy ending.

Personal Taste

The show has its comedic and romantic moments but there were also a lot of dramatic scenes. I thought it would be a light romantic comedy but I felt that there were a lot of dramatic scenes. Although these dramatic scenes were done well and the main leads were able to act their characters well.

Lee Min Ho and Son Ye Jin did have good on-screen chemistry and they make a cute couple. There are times I thought that Lee Min Ho is too tall for Son Ye Jin but it worked out well especially on the those scenes that he carried her on his back. Their romantic and sweet scenes were good but there were scenes that I think they could be sweeter or maybe it’s just because of Lee Min Ho’s character. His character is quite serious and doesn’t smile that much. He’s also a neat freak which is the total opposite of Son Ye Jin’s character. I was a bit disappointed on the part where Lee Min Ho was acting gay. It’s because he’s not really acting gay, he was assumed to be gay because of certain situations. This then leads to Son Ye Jin’s character wishing him to be a man who can love a woman. I was happy that they didn’t drag the whole gay issue and it was cleared up on the last part of episode 10.

Personal Taste

I’m sure that a lot of Lee Min Ho’s fans already watched the show because of him. I admit that one of the reasons that I watched the show is because I was curious to see how Lee Min Ho will act as gay person. I didn’t watch Boys Over Flowers since it’s a remake and I’m tired of watching those kind of shows. Lee Min Ho is a good actor based on how he acted out his role in this show. Son Ye Jin is a veteran actress and she was able to portray the role well. I saw her in a movie before so I had an idea if she can act or not.

My favorite scenes are in episode 8, the part where Kae In is writing on Jin Ho’s back and episode 10, the “Game Over” kiss.

Here’s a clip of  the “Game Over” kiss:

I also liked the imagination scenes because they made it like it was really happening but it’s not. Overall, it’s a good show and leaves you with some lessons in life. Like learning to love yourself before others and trusting a person again even if you were hurt badly. You should also stick to your principles but learn to accept help when you really need it. So if you are looking for something fun and light to watch then you might want to give this show a try. Don’t forget to check out some BTS videos in Youtube, they’re fun to watch even if you don’t understand Korean. Lastly, feel free to drop a comment on what you think about this show, whether you liked it or not.

Note: For Filipino viewers, the show will be aired soon on ABS-CBN with the title Perfect Match.
