Yuppie Journals: Updates at last!

Yuppie Journals: Updates at last!Well, as much as I’d like to say that the reason for us not being able to update earlier was because we’ve been terribly busy, I’d have to admit that I was being lazy. An incredible indolence had possessed me and as of this writing, it’s still clinging persistently onto my back. I haven’t been half as productive as I was during the first week and if you’ve ever tried risking anything in your life before, you’d know the feeling I’m about to describe. It’s the uneasy sloshing in the stomach that you can’t throw up, the solidifying trepidation in your bones you can’t shake off that comes only when you first glimpse Failure rearing its ugly head in the horizon before you.

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the Universe: Small Business 102

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the UniverseLast time, we discussed the basics of building a small business to augment your retirement fund. To recap, we discussed the requirements for starting a biz: time, capital, research, and balls. I assume that I didn’t have to say that like getting a part-time gig, you’ll also need to put in work into any business venture. Now for this income-boosting episode, we’ll discuss another law of commerce: the Laws of Economics. I know, I know. I’ve been throwing all these important-sounding laws around. Here are the two reasons why learning the laws of Economics are important: you’d need to keep them in mind while you’re choosing the kind of small business you want to go into; and while you’re in the process of pricing your products.

Stories in 150 words or less: random thoughts

Thoughts are pretty much like falling stars; they occur almost always randomly, they are there then they aren’t, and most people think there is some measure of wonder in them. The fleetingness of random thoughts is where its magic holds, I think, and for that reason Rica and I have resolved to record some of our random thoughts. It may be so we can alleviate some of the boredom (meaning we’re attempting to convince ourselves that our lives are not boring in our heads at least), so we can put some seemingly pointless thoughts in order to find some sort of pattern in our mental processes, or maybe it’s so we can try to invent a sort of magic for ourselves. At any rate, we’ve collected our random thoughts for the week (the ones we could catch) and posted them here.

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the Universe: Small Business 101

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the UniverseIn this episode of the Yuppie Guide, we’ll discuss something that most yuppies consider going into for extra income. There are several ways with which to go about setting up a small business and there are several kinds of small businesses you can try out. That said, we’ll limit each option to 500 words and post it in parts so you don’t have to contend with ginormous walls of text. First things first; what is a small business?

Yuppie Replay: StarCraft

Yuppie Replay: StarCraftEver since Blizzard announced that they will be developing the long, long awaited sequel to StarCraft, I’ve sworn to replay the original game and the expansion, Brood War to refresh my memory. I just finished the replay and I was blown away again. It’s been a while since I first finished the real-time strategy game, and it’s also been a while since I last wrote about video games so please bear with this fangirl. Anyway, on to the replay.

Love According to Disney

Love according to DisneyI’ll admit, I thought I was all set for Valentine’s Day with the Rom-Com and Classics post but as random brain farts don’t usually follow a schedule, I’ll write this down now so my brain can get over what my friend Lei calls Barfintimes Day. Despite popular belief, Valentine’s Day isn’t only for lovers; it’s for singles too. It’s that time of the year when the phrase “singled out” takes a whole new different meaning. Attached friends look upon you with pity, and whatever you say can and will be taken against you and translated as bitterness. People like me however, delight in the communal misery as it is so much better than the “just you” kind of misery which ironically, can come with breaking up.

Yuppie Replay: Rom-Coms and the Classics

Yuppie Replay: Rom-coms and the ClassicsIn light of the coming Hallmark-inspired non-holiday, I’ve busted out several sappy DVDs for a special singleton Valentine movie marathon. For the purposes of this marathon, I’ve decided to divide my viewing equally between the Rom-Com movies (romantic comedies) and the Classics. Arguably, the Rom-Com movies I have lined up can also be considered classics in their own right, but let’s not get into semantics.

Stories in 140 words or less: status messages

I remember that super flash fiction activity we had back in the hell hole, the 50-word story (Note: If the title of the activity wasn’t self-explanatory for you, you can see mine and Rica’s submissions for the said activity here and here.], and I realized that most of the people I know do it on a daily basis – in status messages. Most status messages in Facebook or YM (or Twitter, let’s not get into that) give me ulcer, but some of my more enlightened (and grammatically adept) friends have the most amusing things to say in 140 words or less.

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the Universe: Part Time

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the UniverseHere’s the first part of the Yuppie Guide, the series where you’ll see your extra income options and weigh them accordingly. By this time, you should know that it takes real work to get from Point A (where you are right now) to Point B (where you want to be, preferably retired by 50) and there is some amount of risk with each option. For the first option we have, there is minimal risk and the only capital you’ll need is time and effort. It’s part-time work, people.

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the Universe

The Yuppie Guide to Conquering the UniverseThe title says it all and I know, I know, it’s incredibly ambitious. As yuppies (young underpaid professionals) it takes a certain amount of ambition to get to where you ultimately want to be. I’m sure most of you are wondering what “conquering the universe” means, and we’ll explore that in this series of articles. You see, I’ve interviewed a couple of young NOT-underpaid professionals and I’ve learned a thing or two about their world domination plans.
